A travelling couple who quit their 9-5 jobs to live in a van have made it to the Arctic Circle - in a 3,000 mile trip.

Chris, 31, and Sam Hoar, 30, left Plymouth in February to venture up through Sweden and Finland - and they have just arrived in Alta, Norway.

They are now heading to North Cape - the furthest northern point of the country they are able to drive to - before arriving home in April to round off the epic 7,500 mile trip.

Despite the temperature dropping to -23 degrees Celsius, the pair, who are now travel bloggers, say their trip has been “incredible” and they have never looked back since buying a van in 2018.

Sam said: “I don’t think we realised what we were actually in for - but this journey has been absolutely breathtaking and blown our minds.

“Time doesn't wait for anybody and taking a risk to move into our van was the best thing we’ve ever done.

“We knew we had nothing to lose because in the worst case scenario we would go back to doing our nine to five jobs that we did anyway - but life is too short!”

Chris and Sam were determined their adventure to the Arctic Circle would be possible after watching videos of others living the van life and exploring the world during lockdown.

The couple, who have been together for 16 years after meeting at school when they were 14, were particularly inspired by one of these videos showing a couple travelling through Norway.

Sam admitted the scenery blew them away so much that they knew they had to go.

So far in their Arctic circle trip, the pair say they have been left astounded by the beautiful scenery and vast expense of wildlife.

Chris said: “For us, we have never seen snow like this in all our lives.

“I’m talking seven foot of show outside right, with temperatures dropping to -23 degrees.

“The weather has definitely tested the van properly being up here, but we still haven’t broken down and the vastness of the wilderness all around us is breathtaking and unreal.

“We have seen wild moose - that look like horses on steroids over here - reindeer, wolves.

“We've definitely got the bug now and feel like we even want to return next year even earlier in the year during the more extreme winter.”

Before leaving their nine to five jobs for the tiny-home life in living from a van, Sam worked as a beauty therapist and Chris was working as a mechanical engineer aswell as being a retained firefighter.

After always enjoying exploring nature together, the pair decided to hire their first van for three weeks to travel New Zealand and explore the South Island in 2018.

Two weeks after arriving back to the UK after this trip, the new-found explorers bought their first van “and have never looked back”.

Sam explained: “I must admit when Chris first said that we're gonna be hiring a camper van to see New Zealand I like ‘are we not going to do any hotels?'

“But he said you can’t really do New Zealand in hotels as the best way to travel is via a campervan so you can see all the sites.

“So I trusted him - and fell in love with it.

“I actually adored the fact that you had your home and you could just rock up and move and go wherever you wanted to go.

“So when we came back, Chris bumped my arm into getting our first little Volkswagen T4 and that's what we started off with - just an adventure van, really, but it felt so right.

“We were going away at the weekends when we had time off together and we never ever wanted it to end, and we just kept having conversations about how nice it would be to do it permanently”.

The pair continued talking about the potentials until the pandemic hit - which is when they decided to rent out their home in Plymouth, conduct a ten hour journey to purchase minibus up in Scotland and do it up to meet the entirety of their living needs.

Many youtube videos later, Chris and Sam were able to implement running water pipes, electricity, gas pipes, insulation and plumbing into their new home.

The van is now kitted out with a shower, toilet, 100 litres of freshwater, a wastewater tank and 350 watt solar panels on the roof.

Chris said: “I googled it and thought I'm just gonna use YouTube, and then you'll just watch a couple of videos like, OK, I'll see what I need to do.

“And I thought wow, I’ve literally never done this before but you can just watch a video and do it.

“We did get it signed off though, just to make sure the really important things were safe!”

One in four Americans have no idea if they'll get a tax refund this year, according to new research.

A survey of 2,000 U.S. adults looked at how many are thinking ahead when it comes to their taxes and found the percentage of those who aren’t sure if they’ll get a tax refund is up to 25% from 20% last year.

On the other hand, 43% anticipate getting a tax refund in 2024, slightly up from 40% last year.

The average respondent who thinks they will be getting a tax refund estimates that they’ll get back $2,023.50 this year, down from the average of $2,338.40 last year.

Conducted by OnePoll for Cricket Wireless, the annual tax time survey found that two in three Americans said that if they received a tax refund in 2024, they would use it in a more “mature” way than years past (67%).

Of those who anticipate a tax refund, three in five are relying on that extra income and 36% plan on saving it, compared to just 26% last year.

Half of those who have gone through a major life event like putting contributions into a retirement plan (17%) or getting a new job (11%) also said that they would use their tax refund to help financially support new changes.

However, a quarter of Americans admit to feeling stressed leading up to the tax deadline (28%).

What’s causing that stress? For many, it’s uncertainty over what to expect.

For instance, of those who experienced life changes over the past year, such as getting married or having a kid, only 38% knew that these events will affect their tax return.

Knowledge also plays a role in respondents’ uncertainty, as one in five couldn’t define common tax terms like “adjusted gross income,” “dependent” or “filing status.”

The economy is also a culprit for those who are less certain about their finances this year.

Only a third of Americans think the 2024 economy will be better than the previous year (34%), with 45% sharing that this perspective impacts their decision to spend or save their tax refund.

To combat this, a majority of respondents have done more budgeting (68%) and 44% have spent less money, overall.

“High inflation and an unpredictable economy make many Americans feel uncertain around tax season,” said Tony Mokry, chief marketing officer at Cricket Wireless. “For many, this is the only time of year that they receive a windfall and how they treat these funds oftentimes sets the tone for their year financially. We continue to encourage consumers to look for value where they can, particularly on recurring bills like phone plans.”

However, those surveyed are taking control of their finances, keeping track of them on their phone (51%).

While only half of respondents last year used a banking app (52%), that number is up to 92% of those who use finance apps today.

Mobile wallet (48%) and investing apps (42%) were also among the most common finance apps last year, and are still popular among respondents this year (66% and 39%, respectively).

Credit score management apps have also climbed in popularity (39%) and one in five have a tax filing app, too (18%).

To make use of their resources, nearly a quarter of those who own a smartphone will use it to file their taxes in 2024 (23%).

“It's reassuring to see that more people are using their phones to manage their finances,” said Tony Mokry, chief marketing officer at Cricket Wireless. “It's difficult to stay on top of it all, but having access at your fingertips takes the headache out of managing money, making it easier than ever to track your spending, budget effectively, and work towards your financial goals.”

Survey methodology:
This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 general population Americans was commissioned by Cricket Wireless between Jan. 11 and Jan. 16, 2024. It was conducted by market research company OnePoll, whose team members are members of the Market Research Society and have corporate membership to the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research (ESOMAR).

Shocking CCTV footage shows three ‘brazen’ thieves using cable cutters to steal £1,500 worth of power tools from a 112-year-old family business.

The middle-aged suspects broke through chains at Mackays of Cambridge and stuffed six pieces of the expensive equipment into their coats before walking away.

They seemed completely undeterred by the 35 CCTV cameras in the store - and one of the men even looked straight into a lens before taking part in the theft.

Neil Mackay, 68, co-owner of the business, has shared the footage in the hope of shaming the men, who broke into his shop on March 1.

He said: “It’s absolutely horrifying when you see how brazen they were.

“They clearly came in with a shopping list, and they knew exactly what tools they were aiming for – they went for the top brands.

“We had everything cabled down, chained down, so these guys came in armed with cutters.

\
