From around 500 to 1500 CE, the Arawak and Carib people, who called the island Ichirouganaim, were the island's inhabitants.<br/><br/>Carib people<br/>European Arrival and Colonization<br/><br/>The first European contact with Barbados likely occurred in the early 16th century when the Spanish visited the island.Spain briefly claimed the island due to the presence of bearded fig trees, which they believed resembled beards. Portugal then laid claim to the island from 1532 to 1536 but ultimately abandoned it.<br/><br/>British Colonization and the Rise of Sugar<br/><br/>An English ship, the Olive Blossom, arrived in Barbados in 1625.The English claimed the island for King James I and established the first permanent settlement two years later. The English quickly transformed the island into a sugar-producing colony, a process thatdepended heavily on African slave labor.<br/><br/>Olive Blossom ship<br/>Barbados became the world's leading sugar producer by 1650.This era of prosperity was built on the backs of enslaved Africans who were brought to the island to work on sugar plantations.<br/><br/>The Fight for Independence<br/><br/>The institution of slavery faced growing opposition in the 18th and 19th centuries.A slave rebellion led by Bussa in 1816 was a major turning point in the fight for emancipation. Slavery was finally abolished in Barbados in 1834.<br/><br/>Bussa<br/>Following emancipation, the Barbadian people continued to fight for self-government.Full internal self-government was achieved in 1961, and Barbados joined the short-lived West Indies Federation from 1958 to 1962.<br/><br/>Independence and Beyond<br/><br/>On November 30, 1966, Barbados gained full independence from Britain. Errol Barrow became the country's first Prime Minister, and Barbados opted to remain a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.<br/><br/>Errol Barrow<br/>Since independence, Barbados has become a successful middle-income country with a strong tourism industry. The island nation has also maintained a democratic tradition and remains a significant player in regional affairs.")
